Unexpected guest at the cabin

My dad e-mailed this picture to me. My cousin, Kevin took this picture at the family cabin on Lookout Mountain above Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It's a bear cub looking for some food. I am glad that momma bear wasn't around, too. That can tend to get nasty. I like the pictures, though. I remember that outhouse in the background all too well! LOL!

Happy B-Day Tiana

Tiana is in double digits! She turned 10 on Saturday. She had her B-Day party last weekend, since she is at her dad's this weekend. She got some cool gifts and likes the fact that she now has two digits with her age. That will change a few years down the road! LOL! Happy b-Day kiddo! We love ya!

Do you like Gladiator movies?

Italian archaeologists have discovered the tomb of the anchient Roman hero believed to have inspired Russell Crowe's character in the hit movie "Gladiator," Rome's officials announced on Thursday at a press conference.
Marble beams and columns, carvings and friezes first emerged from the Roman soil during construction work to build a residential complex in Saxa Rubra, not far from the headquarters of Rai, Italy's state-run television station.
According to Cristiano Ranieri, an archaeologist who led the excavation at the site, the huge fragments belonged to a monumental marble tomb built on the banks of the Tiber River at the end of the second century A.D.
"This is the most important ancient Roman monument to come to light for 20 or 30 years," Daniela Rossi, an archaeologist for the city of Rome, told reporters.

I miss you.

Ten years ago today I lost someone very important to me. My grandpa, Charles Gardner passed away on October 10, 1998. I was so fortunate to take a weeks vacation in September of that year. The last time I saw my grandpa was September 10, 1998. That was my 29th B-day. It was a very special day. I could tell that he wasn't going to be around much longer. He was skin and bones and was stuck in the bed at the care home he was in. I remember rubbing my whiskers on his face and telling him that paybacks are a booger. He laughed. You see, when I was a kid, he would throw me down and rub his whiskers on my face. It hurt, but he found it funny. He would also like to get me by "milking my mouse." That's when you squeeze the life out of a persons pinky.
He was a great man and was loved by all of his family and friends. I still think of him a lot. I still love to hear my grandma talk about how good looking she thought he was and how much she loved him. I wanted to take a minute and share with you how much Charles L. Gardner meant to me. I miss you, Grandpa. I love you.

At last! He will go to prison!

Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his wife and her friend in Los Angeles, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room.
The 61-year-old former football star was convicted of all 12 counts late Friday after jurors deliberated for more than 13 hours. He released a heavy sigh as the charges were read and was immediately taken into custody.
Simpson, who went from American sports idol to celebrity-in-exile after his murder acquittal, could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Happy Anniversary to Jeremy and Taunia

Happy Anniversary to Jeremy and Taunia. Today they are celebrating the big day. I talked to Jeremy on the phone yesterday and he said that they will be celebrating it this coming weekend. I am sure that they won't have any trouble finding things to do in the city. Happy Anniversary.

I had a wasted trip to Kansas City on Sunday

Kristi and I headed up to Kansas City on Sunday to see the Broncos and Chiefs game. I was hoping for a good game. It was good for Kansas City fans. They spanked the Broncos 33-19. We got fried in the stands as the Broncos were cooked on the field. They played like crap. They are now 3-1.

Headed to Kansas City today!

It's 6 a.m. and I am up and around for the day trip to Kansas City. My friend, Dan got free tickets to the Chiefs game against the Broncos today at Arrowhead Stadium. He has known me for years and called and asked if I wanted to go to the game. I said yes, of course. His radio station is in Kansas City and they had tickets to giveaway. He sent me an extra pair of tickets. I am taking Kristi up there. I am not sure if she is very excited to go, but she agreed to go. I will let you know how the trip goes. I hope it ends with a Broncos victory!

Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at age 83

Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.
Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.
In May, Newman he had dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues.
I was very upset to hear of this news today. I liked him a lot. He will be missed.

Happy Birthday, Grandma!

I am sorry that I haven't been able to update the blog lately. I have been so busy with work. I did make it a point to get on here and wish a Happy Birthday to my wonderful Grandma Gardner. I just spoke with her on the phone to wish her a Happy B-Day. She sounded great! She was eating lunch, so it was a quick call. I miss you, Grandma and love you very much. I hope to see you soon and pictures are on the way soon for you. Love ya! Have a great day!

Happy Birthday to Smitty

I would like to wish a Happy Birthday to Harold Smith, my uncle Smitty. He got an early present with a Denver Broncos win on Sunday. They refs gave all of us Broncos fans a gift. I usually talk to Smitty 3-4 times every Sunday. We call one another and give our comments on the Broncos games. He was in Vegas last week and I was on the way back from NYC this weekend, so we weren't able to talk shop. I am sure that we will this week. I hope that you have a great day, Smitty. We miss you guys.

Headed to NYC!

It's going to be a busy weekend, starting Thursday! I am getting ready to head to New York City. My dad and I are flying up there to see my brother. I will let you know how it goes.

Nice Birthday

I turned 39 today. It was a nice day. It started early, when my wife took me out to dinner last night. She surprised me and invited my parents. We had a nice dinner at Texas Roadhouse. Today at work a bunch of co-workers had a B-day lunch for me at Pizza Hut. They got me a cake and some funny gifts. I am wearing the hat that they gave me in the picture above. I like it. I think I might wear it on a regular basis. LOL! Thanks to everyone.

Happy Birthday, Madison!

I would like to wish a Happy 9th Birthday to my wonderful daughter, Madison. Man! They grow fast. It seems just like yesterday when a chunky little kid with big cheeks was in my arms. She is a great kid. We had her B-day party on Monday night at McDonald's. She wanted High School Musical Cupcakes for her party. She got a lot of Hannah Montana, High School Musical stuff and cash. Kristi got her tickets to "High School Musical on Ice" and is going to take her later this month. She is saving her B-day money to buy something at that. I hope that you have a great day and I love you much!

I missed the 5th!!! Sorry, I have been swamped!

I have been very busy the last few days. Also, we have had no Internet at the house. There were some technical issues with the modem and router. I missed a big date in the family. September 5th was my aunt and uncle's anniversary. So, Happy Belated Anniversary to Smitty and Marcia! I will talk to Smitty tonight, I am sure. The Broncos are playing and I always call him 3-5 times a game. I also missed my cousins B-day. Happy Belated B-day to Mike Collins. I hope that you had a wonderful day. Well, I better get back to work. Sorry for the late wishes. Have a nice day.

Cubs do it again!

Trailing by three entering the eighth, the Cubs stormed back with five runs, highlighted by Aramis Ramirez's clutch go-ahead grand slam. Mike Fontenot also went deep in the eighth as the Cubs notched their sixth straight victory.
The Cubs are now 84-50. They have the best record in baseball and have been playing the best baseball I have ever seen them play, and they have been my favorite team since 1984.

Former Raider great, NFLPA head Gene Upshaw dies

Gene Upshaw, a towering lineman on the football field who went on to win untold millions of dollars for NFL players as their union leader, has died at age 63.

Upshaw had a Hall of Fame career as a guard for the Oakland Raiders — a team that won two of the three Super Bowls it reached during his 15 years in a black and silver jersey. But his work as executive director of the NFL Players Association over a quarter-century was even more important. It changed the business side of the league.

Upshaw died Wednesday night at his home near California's Lake Tahoe, of pancreatic cancer, the NFL Players Association said Thursday. His wife Terri and sons Eugene Jr., Justin and Daniel were by his side. NFLPA president and Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae said Upshaw only learned Sunday that he had the disease, after he fell ill and his wife took him to the hospital.

Gene was a great player. He was an All-Pro. He was a Hall of Famer. If you look at the history of the NFL you're going to find out that he was one of the most influential people that the league has known. He did so much, not only for the players, but also for the owners, the teams, and the game of pro football," John Madden, who coached Upshaw when Oakland won its first Super Bowl, said in a statement.

"This is deeper than head of the union passing away, and it's deeper than an ex-player. This is missing someone that is and was like family. It's a tough day for all of us."
Upshaw's death reverberated throughout the NFL, a shock to owners and players alike, even those who had made him the focal point for their complaints over pension and health benefits for retired players.

As a player, the seven-time Pro Bowler was one of the best ever, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1987, the first time he was eligible.

Happy Birthday, bub!

The world was blessed on August 19, 1972. That's when Jeremy David Hubbard was born. I am proud of my little brother and love him a bunch. Today is his 36th B-Day. He is in Washington D.C. working this week. I am getting very excited to go up and see him in a few weeks. Here's a picture of him from a few days ago. I asked him about the picture. He said he saw the kid when they were walking on the Brooklyn Bridge and asked if he could take a picture with him, because he liked the shirt. Happy B-Day, bub! I hope that you enjoy the day. Remember! I will hit 40 before you, so don't worry about anything. LOL!

Phelps wins 8th gold medal; breaks tie with Spitz

Michael Phelps locked arms with his three teammates, as though they were in a football huddle calling a play, then hugged each one of them. It took a team to make him the grandest of Olympic champions. And one last big push from Phelps himself.

Going hard right to the end of a mesmerizing nine days in Beijing, Phelps helped the Americans come from behind Sunday in a race they've never lost at the Olympics, cheering from the deck as Jason Lezak brought it home for a world record in the 400-meter medley relay. It was Phelps' history-making eighth gold medal of these games.

These Olympics have been wonderful to watch. I have enjoyed it very much. Go USA!

World's tallest woman dies at 53

In this Sept. 2, 1995 file photo, Sandy Allen, poses for a picture with Will Denk, at the library in Shelbyville, Ind. The 7-foot-7 Allen considered the world's tallest woman died early Wednesday Aug. 13, 2008 at a nursing home in her hometown of Shelbyville. She was 53

We are staying with the name

I heard back from our team representative and it looks like my team is still going to be called the Iceassins. Everyone seems to like the logo and we are sticking with the name. I am happy for that.

Welcome to the "Fat Side of the Force!"

My friend, Dustin shot this picture for me at the Weird Al concert last week. He does a song on stage about Star Wars. He has Darth Vader, Storm Troopers and Boba Fet up there with him. I caught up with a couple of Storm Troopers and tried to confince them that the "Dark Side" of the force is overrated and that they should try the "Fat" side of the force. They didn't have anything to say...literally.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

We have a logo! I hope.

I had my friend make a logo for my hockey team. There are rumblings of the team changing the name, so I am not sure we will still be the Iceassins. The logo is awesome. What do you think?

Going "Back to School"

I shot this picture of Maddie and Zach on Monday night. Yes, Zach has the cheesy, goofy fake smile going. We went to their Open House at their new school. They start on Wednesday. Man! This summer flew by! They seem to be excited to go to a new school. The building is just a few years old and it is very nice inside. I met their teachers. The kids both seemed to like them. They are growing so fast! It's hard to believe that Maddie will be 9 years old in less than a month. I am getting old!!!

Happy Anniversary Ron and Kay

August 10th is Ron and Kay's Anniversary. I would like to wish them a very Happy Anniversary. We enjoy getting to spend time with them. They are very special to everyone around them. You mean a lot to all of us. Have a special day.

Another death over the weekend.

As you know by now, Bernie Mac passed away over the weekend. Another icon of entertainment, Isaac Hayes, passed away this weekend as well. A man whose work spanned decades, genres, and styles, Hayes has meant many different things to many fans. But he who Made history with his brand of hot buttered soul and his decades of film and television work, particularly as the voice of Chef on "South Park," will no doubt be dearly missed by millions.

Bernie Mac dies at 50

Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died Saturday at age 50.
"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.
She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.
The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.
Recently, Mac's brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.
Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama's campaign.
But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.
"Wherever I am, I have to play," he said in 2002. "I have to put on a good show."
Mac worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago's South Side. He began doing standup as a child, and his film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans comedy "Mo' Money" in 1992. In 1996, he appeared in the Spike Lee drama "Get on the Bus."
He was one of "The Original Kings of Comedy" in the 2000 documentary of that title that brought a new generation of black standup comedy stars to a wider audience.
Mac went on to star in the hugely popular "Ocean's Eleven" franchise with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
His turn with Ashton Kutcher in 2005's "Guess Who" topped the box office. It was a comedy remake of the classic Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn drama "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" — with Mac as the black dad who's shocked that his daughter is marrying a white man.
Mac also had starring roles in "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."
In the late 1990s, he had a recurring role in "Moesha," the UPN network comedy starring pop star Brandy.
The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.
The series about a man's adventures raising his sister's three children, won a Peabody Award in 2002. At the time, judges wrote they chose the sitcom for transcending "race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion — and cool."
The show garnered Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Mac.
"But television handcuffs you, man," he said in a 2001 Associated Press interview. "Now everyone telling me what I CAN'T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, `Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?'"
He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his "The Original Kings of Comedy" co-stars, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.
In 2007, Mac told David Letterman on CBS' "Late Show" that he planned to retire soon.
"I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit," Mac told Letterman. "I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."
Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago. He grew up on the city's South Side, living with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.
In his 2004 memoir, "Maybe You Never Cry Again," Mac wrote about having a poor childhood — eating bologna for dinner — and a strict, no-nonsense upbringing.
"I came from a place where there wasn't a lot of joy," Mac told the AP in 2001. "I decided to try to make other people laugh when there wasn't a lot of things to laugh about."
Mac's mother died of cancer when he was 16. In his book, Mac said she was a support for him and told him he would surprise everyone when he grew up.
"Woman believed in me," he wrote. "She believed in me long before I believed."

Gary Zimmerman Inducted

Offensive lineman Gary Zimmerman has become the second Denver Broncos player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Hailed by teammate John Elway as the best left tackle he ever saw play the game, Zimmerman spent five years with the Broncos and was on the team that beat the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.
Zimmerman said during his induction speech Saturday that he had a lot of sleepless nights before games because of the responsibility of protecting Elway. Zimmerman thanked Elway, the only other Bronco in the Hall of Fame, and said "it was worth every sleepless night." Zimmerman played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1986-92 before he was traded to the Broncos in 1993.

I am excited, because the Broncos will have another member next year. Shannon Sharpe will be eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Two tickets to the Gun Show!

I did a remote over the weekend at the US Weapons Gun and Knife Show at the Kansas Coliseum. It was pretty interesting seeing the folks walk in and out with their guns. I snapped this photo from my cell phone. It is a lady walking out of the show with her new pride and joy. I thought it looked pretty funny.

Back on the bike!

It's a toastie morning in Wichita. Austin and I spent a couple of hours riding bikes this morning. It was nice to get "Old Blue" out of retirement. It decided to do a Brett Favre and come back. We got a few miles in this morning, but it started to get very hot and sticky outside. Above are a couple of shots from the ride. These were taken under the bridge at Kellogg and Maize in Wichita. We were almost home. I had the cheesy look and Austin had the "get me home" look. It felt good to ride this morning.

Broncos to goodbye to safety John Lynch

The Broncos career of safety John Lynch is over. The 16-year veteran was not on the field for the morning practice on Wednesday and when asked by the media, Head Coach Mike Shanahan replied, "John was excused for personal reasons." But Wednesday afternoon, it became clear that Lynch was done as a member of the Denver Broncos and will be released on Thursday.
During the offseason, Lynch met with Shanahan and the two agreed on a one-year deal with no guarantee of making the team.
As training camp got under way it was clear that Lynch was not as big a part of the team's defensive plan as he had hoped.

He spent more time watching the action on the field than participating in it.
Lynch was told he'd compete for a starting safety job when he took a pay cut this offseason, but with the emergence of Marlon McCree, Lynch didn't play a single snap in the nickel or dime packages during the first week of training camp.
When asked about the news late Wednesday afternoon, cornerback Champ Bailey said, "Part of me wants him here and part of me wants John to be happy, but that's up to John."

MY TAKE:
This is a bummer. I have been a big fan of his, even when he played at Tampa Bay. I have already come to expect that this is not going to be a good year at all for the Broncos. I think that 6 wins will be a stretch. They have had so many changes and a lot of folks are getting old. I hope that the can at least beat the the Chiefs twice. :)

Thanks for rubbing it in!

My dad sent this from his phone this afternoon. They are in Colorado for the week. This is a picture from the top of Wilkerson Pass. It's looking toward South Park and the Buena Vista area. This is one of his favorite spots in Colorado. We used to camp up there when I was younger. It's awesome at night. It's so quiet and you can see stars all over the place. It's a beautiful state and I love it. Have fun dad and mom.

"Golden Girl" passes away

According to TMZ.com, "Golden Girl" Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84, just three days shy of her 85th birthday. She passed away this morning at her L.A. home. Estelle is best known for playing the wise-cracking Sophia Petrillo on"The Golden Girls."

OOPS! Sorry.

Even Elvis was surprised to hear that I forgot to wish a Happy Anniversary! I would like to send a belated Happy Anniversary wish to my Uncle Lamar and Aunt Joan. The anniversary was about 10 days ago. I apologize that I forgot about it. I hope I can remember mine. :)

R.I.P. Maggy Moo

My thoughts go out to Taunia and Jeremy. Maggy Moo passed away over the weekend. She was a wonderful dog and part of the family. She was literally one of Jeremy and Taunia's kids. Taunia put together a neat video tribute to the cute pooch on her Facebook. I always had fun memories of Maggy. I remember I pet her one time (the first day I met her) and she didn't like it where I pet her and she let me know that right away. She was a fun dog. Taunia, Jeremy, Jake and all of us will miss you. rest in Peace.

We lose two, but "K.C." scores!

The Iceassins lost two more games Sunday night. We got beat 15-4 and 8-1. My brother-in-law Kory got on the scorecard with an assist in the first game and fatty finally scored, too! I made a goal in the first game. It was nice to finally score.

Dark Knight sets the record

Batman has sent Spidey packing as king of Hollywood's box-office superheroes. "The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.
I got a chance to check this movie out over the weekend, and it is awesome! Heath Ledger was great as the joker. I am not going to ruin the movie for you, but I suggest that you check it out if you get the chance. I would like to see it again.

An interesting way to spend summer break

I found this video on you tube awhile back. I remember doing goofy things during the summer when I was a kid, but this tops those stunts by far. Katy Perry's song "I Kissed a Girl" is all over the radio and television now. I like the song. It's very catchy and full of hooks. This video version is pretty funny. Where did the shopping cart come from?

Welcome to the ball park.

It was an interesting evening on Friday. I was scheduled to be the on-field announcer at the Wichita Wingnuts baseball game. That's what I usually do. Well, I got to the stadium on Friday night and it was a different situation. The usual public address announcer was unable to work. I was already on the field preparing for the evening. The teams G.M. tracked me down and asked if I could help out. I said yes. It was interesting. I had a long night. The delay at the stadium is about 1-2 seconds. It's very weird to say something and then hear it a couple of seconds later. I am used to it on the field, but it's very difficult in the press box. I got used to it, but had a few flubs here and there. Above is a picture of me trying to get through the night.

What a way to start the day.

Above is a picture of my car with the radio station in the background. I ran out of gas on the way to work on Thursday. I forgot to fill up on my way in, because I was on the phone with a old classmate of mine and forgot to fill up. He was trying to convince me to go to my 20 year class reunion in Garden City later this month. I was within 50-75 feet of the parking lot. I actually just laughed it off and went into work and told everyone what happened. It was a nice chuckle for everyone. I was able to use a gas can from a station van and put it in the car. I then went and filled up the car and gas can. Oh, about the reunion. I was 170 at the 10 year in 1998 and about 245 now. I am not going.

Getting ready for this one!

"The Dark Knight" opens this week. I have a couple employees that are going to the 12:01 a.m. showing at the Warren Theater. I was debating going with them, but I am getting old and I would get no sleep. Friday is a very busy day. I am going to try and convince Kristi to go and see it. She owes me. We have went to her choice the last couple of times. I am excited to see how good it is. I have heard critics say it is awesome. I loved the last one. I like the dark theme better than the cartoon-like comic book Batman movies in the past. I will let you know if I get to see it. Please let me know if you see it. My e-mail is craighubcap@yahoo.com and I would love to hear your thoughts on the movie.

I better not plan on dying anytime soon.

Yahoo had an article on the "10 US Places to see before you die." There's some interesting places and I have note seen any of them. So, I plan on living a long time, or somehow getting rich and doing a lot of traveling very soon! :) Here's the link for the whole story - http://travel.yahoo.com/p-interests-23247426;_ylc=X3oDMTIyYjhpdnZuBF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEX3MDMjcxOTQ4MQRzZWMDZnAtdG9kYXltb2QEc2xrAzEwYmVmb3JleW91ZGllLTIwMDgtNy0xNg----
